Spring term 2023 begins: patio season!
In just 16 hours, over 200 students eagerly signed up for the spring social organized by @uwstartups, generously supported by Eigenspace and RBCx.
Last night, @uwstartups hosted the biggest (so far) student 'builder' community event of the summer. Organized entirely by the students behind @uwstartups, this rooftop social brought together students who are builders or simply interested in the startup world.
This event marked the third 'social' of its kind in the past nine months that Eigenspace has supported, and it's truly amazing to witness the growth of community connections. The primary aim was to provide a platform for people to meet in person, put faces to their Discord IDs, and engage in discussions about their projects and the lessons they've learned.
The evening featured a skilled drone pilot capturing interesting images, a poster showcasing the diverse yet similar interests of the attendees, and several small ‘tricks’ to get conversations started. What also makes this event unique and special was the minimal use of microphones for speeches, with just 5-10 minutes dedicated to setting the tone and encouraging community spirit.
Throughout the crowd, experienced founders and tech professionals engaged in conversations with students, showing genuine interest in their ideas and providing valuable perspectives. The discussions ranged from evaluating the viability of ideas to contrasting the excitement of building actual rocket ships over-optimizing hedge funds.
The student team responsible for organizing the event deserves tremendous recognition for flawlessly running the show and ensuring a high-quality experience for everyone involved.
We are immensely grateful to RBCx, Contrary, and community leaders like Jay Shah for their support in providing the food, venue, and other essentials. Additionally, the Waterloo Region LRT deserves acknowledgment for its role in making a downtown venue easily accessible to students.
The start of May also marks the start of our new cohort.
Just 12 months ago we welcomed our first student cohort as an experiment and learn. We now have 10 ‘ideas’ and their co-founders learning how to develop that idea in the context of venture capital and be well prepared to raise money, earn money, and keep it.
To date, Eigenspace has engaged over 300 students in the community and worked closely with 25 of them as they develop their ideas into startups.
